Labour councillors have backed plans to build 147 homes on a brownfield site in Old Trafford.
The development on land off Bold Street was recently approved by Trafford Council’s planning committee.
Cllrs Waseem Hassan and Bilal Babar said they could find no fault with the planning application and welcomed the scheme that will include 73 affordable homes. Sixteen will be for social rent and 57 will be available for intermediate shared ownership or rent-to-buy.
The properties will be predominantly three and four-bedroom and scaled largely within two and three-story terraced housing.
Cllr Hassan said: “It’s an excellent scheme – and meets Labour’s priority to deliver more homes of this standard and affordability.”
Vehicle access to the development will be from Bold Street and Maher Gardens and separate pedestrian accesses, including from the adjacent Merlin’s Park.
Homes for Trafford as agreed to pay £1m towards secondary education as part of the planning application.
The developer will also donate £15,000 towards local open space provision.
And there will be new parking control measures covering Tamworth Street, Gladstone Court, Nelson Court, Maher Gardens and Bold Street along with a permit parking scheme.
Cllr Babar said: “I want to congratulate the applicant on this fantastic plan – it ticks all the boxes for me.
“It also delivers on the council’s priority to provide safe and secure housing for all.
“The affordable housing element of the scheme is welcome and is exactly what we need to provide for our residents.
“There couldn’t be a better use of this site.”
The committee report described the currently overgrown site as in a priority regeneration area located just half-a-mile from Manchester city centre.
The three tower blocks and the pub known as The Seahawk were demolished between 2013 and 2014 leaving the plot unused and sealed from public access.
