Flixton Labour councillors have welcomed discussions on future plans for the former William Roe Golf Course which was saved from development for use by the community.

The green space was granted Fields in Trust protected status earlier this year securing its future free from redevelopment.

Members discussed future use of the protected area during a meeting of the Executive Committee on Wednesday, and that work to improve accessibility, signage, wetland habitat and flood management are prioritised in the short term.

In addition, the council will explore external funding opportunities to deliver longer term improvements.

It was also agreed that work with ward councillors, community groups and key partners to develop plans and priorities for the much-loved site would continue.

Cllrs Ged Carter, Dolores O’Sullivan and Simon Thomas welcomed the update on the area’s future and said they’re looking forward to seeing the plans progress.

They said: “The site is an extremely popular green space within the community – and we’re delighted to see that work to improve the area is taking shape.

“The space attracts many visitors ranging from families and dog walkers to bird watchers and joggers. And we’re delighted the green space will never lose its protection and will be accessible to the public for ever.

“As ward councillors, we know how vitally important this land is to the community – and we look forward to providing support as the plans evolve.

“Over the course of the next few months it will be exciting to explore new ways to enhance the area while seeking future funding for other onsite projects.”
